
Kawuma takes lead at Bungoma Open as Giovanni Otieno wins point in World cadets championship

National champions Joyce Nyaruai and Joseph Methu did not travel to the championships
Patrick Kawuma from Uganda is leading the pack on the second day of the Bungoma Open Chess tournament.
Kawuma has so far picked four points after winning all his matches and is on course to win the two day event.
Defending champion Mehul Gohil is finding the going tough as he is lying in 18th position with three points.
The top four contenders all have maximum points. In second place is Eric Muteti while Agot Abuuk from South Sudan lies third.
Samuel Were from Uganda completes the top four position also with maximum points.
Julie Mutisya of Equity Bank has taken an early lead in the ladies category as she has collected four points.
There are only two players with maximum players. Apart from Mutisya, Shukri Shakira from Victoria chess club has also collected four points.
Shakira is one of the junior players taking part in the event.
Apart from Shakira, former under-12 champion Elizabeth Cassidy is also present.
Cheryl Mutwol, who represented the country at this year’s Abu Dhabi Open in October, is also having a good tournament as she lies third with 3.5points.
Top lady players national champion Joyce Nyaruai is missing in the line-up as well as Nakuru Open champion Sasha Mongeli.
In the open category, national champion Joseph Methu and veteran Ben Magana from KCB did not travel to Bungoma as well.
In the junior category, Emmanuel Kandie won the under-8 category with John Wisdom finishing runners-up.
Leo Steve won the under-10 category and Mike Kiprotich finished second.
The under-12 winner was Damien Rotich with Jayden Njeka managing second spot.
Elsewhere, Giovanni Farina Otieno picked his second point at the on-going World Cadets chess championships in Italy.
African champion Jadon Simiyu remains the highest ranked Kenyan. He has so far picked four points after winning half of the matches he has played so far.
Despite arriving in Italy three days after the tournament started, Keli Sossi has picked 2.5 points in the under-12 category.
